Bounding Unicorns

Waltz

Timing

1-2-3-4-5-6, evenly counted over two measures of music.

(1) is taken with LF for leader, RF for follower. (4) is taken with RF for leader, LF for follower.

Technique

Rise & Fall

Rise & fall happens between 2 & 3 counts and 5 & 6 counts. 2 and 5 counts are done down.

For example given the box:

LF forward down (1)
RF right down & rise on RF (2)
down on RF & LF together (3)

RF is placed with head at the height of the first step, then as weight is transfered from LF to RF the left leg extends to straight thus producing the rise and diagonal right/up motion in the body. As weight finishes moving to RF knees bend again into the 1 count height.

Change Steps

These are used to take up a measure of music so as to start a figure on the other foot from the one currently available.

Leader's steps from LF:

LF forward (1)
RF right (2)
LF together (3)

Leader's steps from RF:

RF forward (4)
LF left (5)
RF together (6)

Box

Leader's steps:

LF forward (1)
RF right (2)
LF together (3)

RF back (4)
LF left (5)
RF together (6)

Rotating Box / Left Box Turn

Leader's steps:

LF forward/left 45° & rotate L 90° (1)
RF right (2)
LF together (3)

RF back/right 45° & rotate R 90° (4)
LF left (5)
RF together (6)

The person going forward steps should make smaller steps compared to the person going back. I.e. leader's forward/left step is smaller and back/right step is larger.

Direction change is 90° per measure. A full rotating box is 4 measures and 360° of total direction change.

I take it one measure of a rotating box is a left box turn, 90° of direction change. This can be used to begin a figure from the right foot (for example, butterfly which travels right).

Right Box Turn

Since the right box turn starts with right foot for leader, there must be a change step prior to it to go from left to right foot and a change step after to be able to start from the left foot again.

Leader's steps:

RF forward & rotate R 90° (4)
LF left (5)
RF together (6)

LF back & rotate R 90° (1)
RF right (2)
LF together (3)

Follower's Right UAT

Starting direction LOD.

Follower's steps:

(left 3/8 turn:)
RF back & rotate L 135°
LF left
RF together

(change step:)
LF forward
RF right
LF together

(right UAT:)
RF forward & rotate R 180°
LF back & rotate R 180°
RF together & rotate R 180°

(change step:)
LF back
RF right
LF together

Forward Hesitation

Leader's steps:

LF forward (1)
RF together (2)
hold (3)

Back Hesitation

Leader's steps:

LF back (1)
RF together (2)
hold (3)

Left/Right Hesitations

These can be led & followed but are not a proper figure in waltz, apparently.

Cross Body Lead

Leader's steps:

LF forward (1)
RF together (2)
hold (3)

RF back/right & rotate L 90° &
  move off follower's track (4)
LF left & LH pull follower forward (5)
RF together (6)

(start box:)
rotate L 90° & LF forward (1)
RF right (2)
LF together (3)

The "hold" on 3 count can also be labeled "hesitate".

Unlike salsa, LH in waltz XBL should not go down to waist level and instead should stay at its normal level.

The lead for XBL is primarily from LH apparently rather than RH.

Follower's steps:

RF back (1)
LF together (2)
hold (3)

LF forward
(heel step, upper body is low) (4)
RF forward
(toe step, heel does not come down,
  upper body is tall) (5)
LF forward
(toe step, heel does not come down,
  upper body is tall) (6)
  & pivot L 180°

(start box:)
RF back (1)
LF left (2)
RF together (3)

Promenade Hesitation

Leader's steps:

(from promenade position:)
LF left (1)
RF together (2)
hold (3)

RF left & face partner (4)
LF left (5)
RF together (6)

Promenade Develope

For the leader, identical to promenade hesitation.

The follower kicks on (2-3) with LF.

Butterfly

Prepare: leader's left hand scoops follower's right hand.

Leader's steps:

rotate R 90° & RF right (4)
LF forward small & rotate R 45° & open (5)
RF together (6)

rotate L 45° & LF forward (1)
rotate L 90° & RF right (2)
LF together & reframe (3)

Combos: - 1/4 rotating box into butterfly, scoop hand on the 3 count of the rotating box - UAT into butterfly

Continuous Butterfly

To start another butterfly, leader high fives the follower on (3) instead of reframing.

rotate R 90° & RF right (4)
LF forward small & rotate R 45° & open (5)
RF together (6)

rotate L 45° & LF forward (1)
rotate L 90° & RF right (2)
LF together & RH high five with follower (3)

(butterfly)

Grapevine

Leader's steps from closed:

LF forward (1)
RF forward outside partner (2)
LF left (3)

RF back (4)
LF left (5)
RF together (6)

Twinkle

Closed Twinkle

Leader's steps from closed:

RF right (4)
LF back small & rise (5)
RF replace (6)

LF left (1)
RF back small & rise (2)
LF replace (3)

Lead for the twinkle is the side movement on (1).

In closed twinkle, leader maintains closed hold throughout. Still the leader needs to rotate the follower into the twinkle.

Closed Twinkle RF Exit

It is more natural/smooth to exit out of the twinkle with LF forward, however RF back is also a possibility.

Open Twinkle

Leader's steps from closed:

RF right (4)
LF back small & open L & rise (5)
RF replace (6)

LF left (1)
RF back small & open R & rise (2)
LF replace (3)

In open twinkle, leader releases outside hand and both partners have the outside arms stretched out. Connection is leader's palm on follower's back on (5) and (2).

The easiest/smoothest exit out of open twinkle is to ask for follower's RH with LH on (6) and go into quarter left turn on (1). It is very awkward/impossible to come out of an open twinkle with a back step on (4).

Twinkle To Promenade

Leader's steps from closed:

LF forward (1)
RF right (2)

Leader's steps from closed:

RF right (4)
LF back small & rise (5)
RF replace (6)

LF left (1)
RF back small & rise (2)
LF replace (3)
assume PP & LF together (3)

Hesitation Turn

From promenade, leader's steps:

RF forward (4)
rotate L ~165° & guide follower around left (5-6)

(collect follower & reframe & first half of box:)
LF forward (1)
RF right (2)
LF together (3)

Follower's steps, from promenade:

LF forward rotating L (4)
RF forward rotating L (5)
LF forward rotating L (6)

pivot L ~135° & RF back (1)
LF left (2)
RF together (3)
