How To Have A Separate Search Box on Chrome/Chromium

So far as I can tell, it is presently impossible to have a Firefox-like UI where the address bar and the search bar are separate in chrome. Sources: 1, 2.

The closest thing I've found is the Fauxbar extension (in chrome store). This extension seems to provide the functionality of Firefox's search, the only issue with it is the UI is not Firefox's UI.

There used to be an extension called Search Box that provided this functionality, but it has gotten deleted. I haven't to date succeeded in finding it (or its source) anywhere. This extension has been referenced from here and here, as well as here.
